Legal Support Services

Arnold & Porter LLP offers its Case Managers, Specialists, Patent Law Clerks, Law Clerks, Senior Legal Assistants, Legal Assistants, and Legal Assistant Clerks challenging work in a fast-paced, informal environment.

Legal Support Services is made up of a large group of diverse individuals with varying levels of experience that share one goal: to provide the best support possible to the firm's attorneys and clients. These professionals work in all areas of the firm's practice, under the direct supervision of the attorneys. Many have substantial contact with firm clients and co-counsel.

Case Managers and Specialists

Case managers and specialists are highly skilled, non-attorney professionals. The firm's case managers have extensive experience in the management of large, complex litigations and/or discovery/due diligence projects. They manage activities of teams of legal assistants working on large litigations or on multiple matters for one client or practice area. In some cases, they may be the firm's primary administrative contact with the client.

Specialists are non-attorney professionals with expertise in their specialized practice areas. The firm currently employs specialists in the following practice areas: real estate, financial services, product liability, intellectual property, antitrust/competition and consumer protection, tax, trusts and estates, FDA/healthcare regulatory, public policy, and government contracts.

Patent Law Clerks

Patent law clerks are evening law students who have scientific or engineering degrees and who wish to practice intellectual property/patent law after graduating from law school. Our patent law clerks gain practical, hands-on experience in a challenging, dynamic practice area, and many of our patent law clerks continue their careers at Arnold & Porter after graduating.

Law Clerks

Law clerks are students usually from Washington, DC, area law schools, who have completed at least one full year of law school. These law clerks work directly with attorneys on legal matters. Law clerks are employed during their fall and spring semesters and, occasionally, during the summer. The firm's hiring standards for law clerks are rigorous. Each law clerk's work is evaluated both to determine whether each assignment was performed satisfactorily and to assess the law clerk's potential as an associate should they apply to the firm for an associate position. Law clerks work with attorneys in all areas of the firm's practice.

Senior Legal Assistants and Legal Assistants

The firm has a staff of more than 100 senior legal assistants and legal assistants who work with attorneys on a variety of matters. Hiring standards for senior legal assistants and legal assistants are rigorous. We seek top notch academic credentials and excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills. We also are interested in candidates who bring relevant experience to the firm.

Legal Assistant Clerks

The firm requires legal assistant clerks to have a high school diploma and relevant work experience. Legal assistant clerks provide support to attorneys and legal assistants. Typical projects for legal assistant clerks include document organization projects, running filing and retrieval errands to courts, agencies, and libraries.
